I have one of those little bamboo plants from walmart or whatever. There are 3 stems that sit packed in sand in a little glass vase. 2 of the stems are growing great, but one of them looks dead. The stem is all brown, and the leaves are all wilted. Should I try to remove that stem? I am thinking it will be difficult the way it is packed in sand.

actually it's not a true Bamboo plant it's a dracaenia, more similar to a palm tree. but called lucky bamboo. I suggest just removing the dead foliage by hand and leaving it alone. Good Luck with your good luck dracaenia whoops I mean Bamboo

You have what's commonly called Lucky Bamboo, a dracaena plant. You need to take all three stems out of the container, throw away the dead stem, wash the sand, the 2 remaining stems and the vase and then put the stems and the sand back into the clean vase or maybe a bigger container so that the stems have room to grow.

Actually they're not really bamboo so it doesn't behave the same way. If its 3 stems together its probably 3 different plants so it would be fine to take one out or replace it, if its not too much trouble.

You should probably remove the dead plant, as sometimes the disease can spread to the other stalks. Also, if the cause of the disease is not evident you may wish to provide the plant with more water. The plant that I got from Wal-Mart died after a couple of years due to dehydration.

Just take some scissors and push the sand back a bit and snip off the dead one---do not try to pull it out or you will mess with the roots on the ones alive.

Remove it. There's no sense in keeping dead plants around.
