Those answers aren't correct.

You have to set this up into an equation. Since you know that you have 8 lbs of ground chuck and the price is dollar per lb or ($/lb), then set up an equation so you can find the number of lbs needed of ground round and the total pounds needed. You will be setting this up so you can cancel out lbs and be left with $ so you have to multiply your information together.

(8 lbs * $1.75/lb) + (X * $3.85/lb) = (X + 8 lbs)($3.50/lb)
where X = number of pounds needed to be added to 8 lbs to make a $3.50 mixture. Continuing on, start working each side of the equation:

$14 + ($3.85X) = ($3.50X) + $28

Combine like terms and isolate variables:

$0.35X = $14

And solve for X:

X = 40 lbs

Notice that the units for X is lbs for the entire problem.

Practice reading problems and figuring out each part and what it means if it were to be put in an equation.

let x pounds be mixed
the equation is
8(1.75)+3.85x=(x+8)*3.50
multiplying throughout by 100
1400+385x=350x+2880
transposing
35x=1480
so x=1480/35=42.3
