Gophers usually attack tree roots and other places that get plenty of water. If you don't want to use poisons because of fruit trees etc, when you first plant a tree place broken glass all around the outside of the hole you have dug. Gophers are hemophiliacs (probably because they don't get enough sun). It is true and when they try to burrow into your tree they will cut themselves and bleed to death.
I like using a "Gopher Getter" when they are away from my trees. They sell these at all Home Depot and stores like it. This tool puts poison in the hole where you need it and causes minimal environmental impact.
I never has much luck with the smoke bombs or traps, but these two methods work great! Also cave in any tunnels that are left because a new gopher will occupy them if you don't. I have almost an acre and so do most of the people around me, so I have to do battle with these little beasts all the time!

I had the same problem and tried everything. Someone suggested using chewing gum, apparently they can not digest the gum. I tried smoke, water, poison and traps. I never could get rid of them. You may have to hire an exterminator or get advise from a parks and wildlife representative. Good luck.

You dont there are there to stay the one thing you can do tho is seal all the holes that you see
up (belive me you never find them all)and thats ok and drop a smoke bomb down all of them this worked for me BUT they could show up again and they will not eat anything you put out soo you may have to live with them unless you trap them and most of the time that will not work because you cant get them into the trap
so you may have to pick names for them because they may not be going anywhere my man sorry

Two methods I have tried are;
1. Soak cotton balls in tabasco and chile powder. Place two or three each in a fresh hole and bury them. The gopher leaves within days.

2. Place chocolate Ex-Lax in a fresh hole and bury it. The gophers tend to get very ill and don't return.
