I think it's because by 40, most folks are at a very comfortable point in their lives.

You have enough life experience to know what's important, and what you don't have to stress over.

You don't care as much what other people think of you.

At 40, you do feel some fear, because now you know that death is possible, and can happen quickly and easily. This realization keeps us 'old folks' from doing crazy stuff without thinking it through first.

I guess for me, it's a point where I really value life, and live it wholly - but still think I have many more years in front of me.

I'm still young enough to do pretty much anything I want, and now I have the money to do it right!

This was coined for the baby-boomer generation and what they've found to be an experience at their mid-life crisis.

The Baby Boom is the iconic term widely used to refer to the American population and culture in particular, as post WW II demographics abroad did not mirror the sustained growth in American families over the same interval. Baby boomers also had the highest median household incomes in the United States.

A mid-life crisis is an emotional state of doubt and anxiety in which a person becomes uncomfortable with the realization that life is halfway over. It commonly involves reflection on what the individual has done with his or her life up to that point, often with feelings that not enough was accomplished. The individuals experiencing such may feel boredom with their lives, jobs, or their partners, and may feel a strong desire to make changes in these areas.

The condition is also called the beginning of individuation, a process of self-actualization that continues on to death. The condition is most common ranging from the ages of 35-50, and affects men and women differently. Mid life crisis last about 3-10 years in men and 2-5 years in women, but length may vary in some.

"Life begins at 40" now seems an old cliche and an irrelevant one (so to speak) since there are different trends and a different generation turning 40.

Because at age 40, most of the parenting is over, and statistically, the time between 40 and 55 will be the highest income years of a person's life. Hence more money, and more free time = more fun.

Basically, it's to cheer all the forty-somethings, so they will pretend that all is well and life isn't just a handbasket's ride down a steep hill to the grave from here.

At 40 I am finally able to have my own life. Kid is grown and out of the house, still look good, job stability, life wisdoms, I am finally able to do what I want, when I want.

Generally those over 40 are more liberated in that their kids are probably leaving soon or left, their monetary status is greatly improved, and they have lived long enough to have learned a great deal. I still think most wish they were twenty again at least in body.

I just don't know why they say it, maybe its because your supposed to be more confident and comfortable with yourself at 40, all I know is its rubbish because it doesn't start at 40, mine started at 45, the only thing that did start at 40 was aches and pains, but you know what they say about that, if you wake up on any day after your 40Th birthday and you don't ache or hurt anywhere then your dead, so just pray from aches and pains.
