Find someone who's got a copy of *gasp* Windows Millenium .Doubt your old Compaq can run XP properly.

In many cases, even if the computer meets minimum requirements for XP, it doesn't have enough juice to run XP properly.

Check your computer's resources against the most basic cheap-o laptop carried by Dell, Gateway or HP - if you are close to or better than these, you'll be okay with the upgrade.

However, you've got to look at the cost effectiveness of upgrading the old system for $100, or purchasing a new one - the budget systems from Gateway and Dell usually start at below $400.

It depends if the laptop will support newer versions of Windows. Check Microsoft's site for system requirements. You can buy an upgrade to Windows XP for about $100. Windows 98 WILL upgrade to XP.
