I have noticed that all new printers dont come with a usb cable to connect it up to your pc. if you think about it printers are the only pc accessory that u need to buy extra cables for. if u buy a base unit it comes with mouse and keyboard, speakers comes with all wires to get it connected. but its only the printer that dont come with one of the most inportant cables.
I am refering to printers that can't work with out a pc that is.

to my knowledge a usb cable for printer is just a cable and the versions(ver1.1 and ver2.0) come into the devices that use the cables not the cable it self.

Some people want a long or short cable and due to the price it is silly to include one that may not be used.

First the manufacturer doesn't know if you need a 3', 6', 10', 25' etc. Most of the better printers have multiple protocols meaning they can be hooked up by parallel, USB or even through a network card, some even MAC. Your asking them to guess the configuration of your computer. Your computer manufacturer knows your configuration because they are coming from the "has nothing now" approach. The printer manufactures would have to guess what you bought or put multiple types of cords in that you won't need just to cover the different options and you would have to pay more for the extra cords you didn't want or need just to get an all inclusive package. If it's a low end printer, a lot of people buying the low end printers would switch brands over $10.00 difference in cost and that would be why they are not there.

This can be explained i think.
Printer companies often outsource their wiring needs and companies that make the power supplies from the printers often dont make usb cables. During the packaging process, it becomes an extra logistical and financial problem to outsource the USB cable and then bundle it in the box. Also, Note that not everyone has got the same USB requirement (it can be argued that USB 2.0 gets downgraded to USB 1.1 for certain systems). Some people prefer to get the USB cables with gold connectors.
It could also be they want people to purchase USB cables and thereby a cut but this is highly unlikely due to the sheer number or USB cable manufacturing comapnies.
A less likely situation could be that the same way as a lot of products dont come with batteries, the printers dont come with USB cables. -- cost saving.

There is more than one way to connect a printer. Some can be hooked up to a network or hub, some need to go to parallel ports, and some are wireless, some are USB and some printers are used as stand alone copier or photo printing units. The companies cannot predict how you will be using the machine so they exclude the cable since it would be wasteful in many cases. That way you are also always getting the length you need when you do buy one.

Hi there, I have to agree and disagree with other comments. I do believe the vast majority of printers do come with ink and that it is not usually a full one. Although if it was a really expensive one then it may well. But if it was at the other end of the scale and really cheap then it may not. If you bought a coloured and a black ink, it would cost more than the printer unless you used maybe a kodak. As for the USB adaptor, when i was shopping for one online, NONE of them came with the USB adaptor. They were offered in bundles but are normally about a tenner in some of the big computer shops. However they are only a couple of pounds in places like the supermarkets. Hope some of this may help Andy

I recently bought a printer and that was the only time that I found out it doesn't come with a USB cable--because the store threw in the USB cable for free. (I don't live in the US so I can't recommend the shop)
Anyway, it doesn't make sense to sell a product that you can't use because it does not come with a basic part that you need to make it run.
I agree with the others who say it's to make extra money for the USB cable manufacturers and/or the printer manufacturers.
But maybe also because they assume everyone is going wireless?

All printers do not come with any cable USB or any cable, you have to buy that extra. I guess they do not make money if they give you the cable when you buy the printer.

To save money; the printer market is EXTREMELY competitive right now and just a few dollars in price is important. I can remember when Black and Decker started putting cords on their new power tools that were only about eight inches long just to save a few cents on manufacturing cost! They rationalized it by claiming that most of the time customers were using an extension cord anyway. It was a STOO-PID decision and only lasted a year or two.

You're crazy- CrazyMax. My printer came with cables. If you bought one and it had no cables it was probably an over-site. Contact the company and get your cables!
Have a great day!!!
