Can't tell from here. Most likely its particle, ply or OSB. However there have been times that folks cover some nice hardwood with carpet. Keep your fingers crossed!

Well what does it look like??

Plywood won't have any sort of finish on it what so ever and will be rough. Hardwood even if its old and nasty will not look as unfinished as plywood. It's extremely easy to tell the two apart.

We had hardwood under the carpet in the stairs, but plywood in the hallway. It all depends on what the previous owners did.

Ok, hard wood, would only be 4 inches wide in different boards. I would venture that your hardwood floor would have a "shine" to it, because it was probably varnished many times, before the carpet was put down. If it has paint on it, its probably hardwood.

Plywood, would be unfinished. Contractors dont bother putting paint, varnish or other "sealants" on a plywood floor, because they know its going to be used as a sub floor, or, it may have carpet put over it and thus, it doesnt need any coats of paint.

If you dont see any "lines" that denote floor boards, then it will ultimately be plywood. Plywood comes in 4X8 foot sheets.

Individual boards can be laid down in anywhere from 2 inches across, to as much as 12 inches, depending on the age of the structure.

Older houses tend to have anywhere from 6-8-12 inch boards. (These are usually old farm houses or school houses, or churches that were built in the 1800s).

Modern boards are usually no greater than 4 inches across per board.

I hope this helps.

I wish you well..

Jesse

hardwood would be in strips 2-6 inches wide. Plywood comes in sheets of more like 4' X 8' and is usually a light wood color.

if the boards look like they are planks 3 to 4 inches wide, you may have hard wood flooring, if you can see nails anywhere it's probably just plywood. Just because you have plank flooring doesnt mean it's a hardwood it could be southern yellow pine which is kinda hard but not a true hardwood

Probably hardwood; a lot of homeowners would rather spend the money on just putting carpet over scratched up hardwood instead of paying the money/effort to polish the wood. Unless its the basement (cement), its probably hardwood.

If it does not look like plywood, then it is probably hardwood. Is it sealed with anything?

plywood cuz its cheaper. There is no use in putting carpet over hardwood...

it could be either, if large sections then it's plywood, if in strips it's hardwood.
