Sure, they can keep expanding it indefinitely. But sooner or later, there will be better technologies, better faster graphics, etc... that will make the game obsolete. Or people will just stop playing for something else. So like everything, it has to come to an end.

What are your opinoins for what that ending will be? A grand finale or just nothing special. OR, do you disagree altogether that it will end?

Most MMORPGs when they go don't go in a big way. Games like this cost a lot of money to keep going after all, and as the money goes, the developers get fired. So MMO's generally start "merging servers" first, to cut down out the hardware costs. As players dwindle further this keeps happening. Games with time cards often suddenly no longer ship time cards, and pay online monthly only. Cancellation notices will generally happen a few months later, with info on the companies new project.

the other guy has it, right on, far as i know.

i used to help admin a MUD.

it's still up... but doesn't get the 30-35 people a day it used to (which is big numbers, believe it or not). now-a-days, it probably gets like 2-5 people a day. granted, that game's free to play, but still, people just... teemed out.

it wasn't even steadily, it was like 1 less person... then 3 less people... until today's low numbers.

as the other guy said, as this happens, the game no longer pays for itself (and then some), so they cut the servers to keep production costs higher, they move/terminate employees... etc...

anyway, the other guy has the best answer you'll get, sounds like he's gone through this.
