It should really be written using arabic characters. Apparently arabic vowels are slightly different from ours. The world's news sources haven't chosen a standardized spelling soo.... there you are, stuck with multiple spellings.

You see the same thing going on with Libya's ruler. His name is spelled anything from Gadhafi to Gaddafi to Khadafy. It all goes back to the fact that people in that part of the world don't use our alphabet.

It is supposed to be spelled Osama, that is the only way that i have ever seen it spelled. Maybe it is originally written and arabic and the letter at the beginning translates as either an 'O' or a 'U'

because his name is really spelled with arabic characters, it is open to translation of spelling when put into english. If you notice though, in the usa his name is very rarely spelled USAma because Americans do not like that the first three letters of his name to spell our country. you will see it spelled Osama more frequently.

I've never seen it with a U before. It'll be because someone started spelling it wrong and others copied.

It's simply a translation issue. It can be spelled either way.

Just different forms of translation from east to west. Still the same person, different vowel.

Because it can be anglicized any number of ways. The U.S. Government has settled on "Usama" and calls him UBL for short.

i guess both are an acceptable form of spelling. either that or they're trying to insult him by misspelling his name.
