The reason this may occur is because you didn't set the printer properties to print in greyscale. When you print a document that has color and you want it in black and white you have to specify that you want it in greyscale. You do this via the printers advance options in the properties tab in the print menu window. In which you should find options to adjust print quality, ink quantity etc, print menu windows vary so look for the option that says greyscale and select it, that should solve your problem.

Try the settings of the printer
goto printing preferences and select black and white only.
Printing is done by a printer and not a computer. The computer only manages the printer.

you may not think ink is low but something is wrong with that cartridge. run a printer check and print out a check page. the black cartridge may be gummed up or not working right.

Make sure the tape is off the cartridge before you put it in the printer. I've seen people do this before.
