If you ban the guns as in every other civilized society it would not be long before the bad guys ran out of guns. Remember a bad guy uses a gun the 1st thing he does is ditch the gun so it can't be used against him if he gets caught. Once you ban guns no new noes can be made or imported. So the bad guys again won't get there guns any where near as easily as they do now. That can only lead to few gun crimes. In countries like japan or Europe don't have the gun crimes like we have they either ban or are very restrictive as to when you can have and what kind of gun you can have.

I knew a fellow from Norway several years ago who told me all Norwegians are required to own a government issued military rifle and the government inspects the rifles on a regular basis to ensure they are kept in clean working order. The fellow said this was a lesson learned from previous wars and that Norway would never leave itself vulnerable. The fellow also said as a result of this law, crime was virtually non-existent. Criminals knew everyone had a powerful weapon the owners were trained to use and didn't dare break into someones home. Other small European countries have similar laws. In Brazil where guns are heavily restricted, crime is rampant and their murder rate per capita is higher than in the U.S.
During WWII, the British had few firearms and could not defend their own country on the ground from the Germans. The USA provided them with firearms. In a world where terrorists have attacked the USA and have vowed to kill "the infidels", meaning us, do you really think the average intelligent American is willing to give up what could be their only hope of defending themselves and their families?
If someone broke into your house, how would you defend yourself and/or your family? Remember, you wouldn't be dealing with a rational person. You would be dealing with a criminal with the likely intent of killing you and your family. Are you going to try and talk them out of it? The moment you pause and show indecisiveness, you give the assailant the advantage and they will get in the first shot, or stab.
If you've ever had to defend someone else's life, you wouldn't hesitate to use a firearm - it's the quickest way to disable the person intent on harming you and your family.
Think about it.

No and its not to late.
Criminals are always going to be able to find guns and illegal weapons.
But if the government makes it harder on the average citizen to defend themselves crime will go up.
If every law abiding citizen bought a gun and got a pistol permit criminals would turn to other forms of crime because they would be scare to commit personal crimes involving a person because they never know who has a gun and will shoot them.
The just passed a new law in Alabama thank god its was about time.
Use to if someone broke into your home they had to be coming at you to kill you before you could legally shoot them and get away with it. But now if someone breaks into your house in Alabama you can shoot first and ask questions later. No more wondering if your going to be charged with murder if you kill someone breaking into your home while you and your family are sleeping.
If it was like that everywhere and more citizens went out and bought hand guns or shotguns then criminals would defiantly thing twice before climbing through a occupied home in the middle of the night.

Exactly right. Anyone who thinks banning guns is a solution to anything obviously lives in a dream world far removed from the street, where with the right connections and a few dollars anyone can get an untraceable, illegal weapon in nothing flat. If you ban guns it makes those of us without those connections unable to obtain guns while those with those connections would be all but unaffected by such laws.
Incidentally, I do not like guns, nor do I--or will I--own one. This is just common sense.

Unfortunately, banning guns at this point and time will only benefit the criminals. Why? Two factors:
1) Law-abiding citizens who don't or can't own guns will be easy victims of criminals. and;
2) Police forces as of now are ill-equipped and undermanned to cope with the current crime situation.
From a practical point of view, the Israeli's, Swiss and the Austrian's permit all their citizens to carry guns and there is ZERO crime in their countries. It's because of the discipline, sense of responsibility and patriotism they have for their countries.
Although I do want peace just like every human being on this earth, I am still a practical person who acts according to the situation.
-------------
"He who is skilled in the ways of peace but not in war lacks foresight and intelligence. Therefore in times of peace prepare for war and in times of war prepare for peace. A general unsheathes his sword from his scabbard in war but keeps his sword always by his side during peace." - Sun Tzu Ping Fa (The Art of War by Sun Tzu)
Peace to all.

Has banning drugs worked in America? No. Getting rid of guns just means law-abiding citizens wouldn't have any, therefore criminals wouldn't need to feel scared breaking into your house at 2am with you wielding a butter knife.
You can't ban anything from the masses. Anything that has been banned is in someone's possession illegally right now.

It would increase black market guns and smugglers would make even more of a profit
I do not advocate making guns available to all, but i don't think a gun ban at this point in time would be effective. It would most likely make things worse (for law-abiding citizens)
Maybe you could take Chris Rock's advice: make bullets VERY expensive :)

I very much like Wikipedia's coverage of this(see link). Simply put, trying to ban guns will not have the stated intended effect.

You are right it would keep honest citizens from owning a gun. The criminals will get them. Criminals dont obey gun laws so they would be the only ones with them. Then how can we defend ourselfs.

Criminals do not care about the law. So they would not turn their (already illegal) guns in. They would know that they can pretty much do as they please, since the law-abiding citizen would not be able to protect them self.
Liberals would be jumping for joy though, knowing that criminals were safe from the law-abiding.
