No, they're not going to single-handedly control the fly or mosquito population in your back yard. They have to be in a controlled environment, like in your house. But yes, they do eat flies or insects that fly around your house.
Besides, I wouldn't wanna pay thirty or fourty dollars for a plant that only eats every few hours if I'm trying to get rid of some particular type of insect. Hardly worth it, don't you think?
But, they are awesome to watch! It's really cool to see them snap up a little fly...buy one. Find out for yourself.

they really do catch and eat insects. unless u devote a ton of space to a lot of plants, though, u prob won't find that they help control the insect population much.

I have one and it does eat bugs but not enough to make a difference.
