Im 6 weeks pregnant. My husband is getting ready to prime my daughters bedroom so we can paint her walls. Im not doing the painting or priming, but wondering if I should be around smelling the fumes? We can pull the door shut to the room & open a window? What do you think

I think it would be better for your health and the babies health if you stayed as far away from the fumes as possible. If that means getting a hotel for a few days, then that's what you should do.

Better to play it on the safe side.

I am in my third pregnancy and just painted both my girls room and my living room by myself. I read in some of the pregnancy books that you should avoid being around paint and their fumes. Unfortunately I needed to do it since my husband is on deployment and there won't be much time before the baby comes when he gets here so I needed to rearrange and paint. My doctors gave me a list at my visit of medications and things that are safe. That said painting was perfectly safe and to just make sure it was well ventilated. Open windows and use a fan just to circulate the air. If it really bothers you just avoid it all together and take a mommy's day out. Good Luck!!!

I concur with Royalhinney. Petroleum products can cause harm to the developing fetus and the fumes are the entry point though your lungs. Latex and oil based paints have this. In California for example there is a legal requirement that you be informed that inhaling fumes from paint can be injurious to a developing fetus. Play it safe and stay with friends and make sure the house is well aired out on your return. Congratulations and best of luck

Instead of shutting him in the fumes with just a window open, why dont you go out that day? Do spend some time with a friend or something. You should not be around those fumes. But your husband should have better ventilation, too.

I am a professional painter and pregnant myself, I am 30 weeks along. As long as he is using the latex primer there should be no problems. If he is using oil based primer then you definitely don't want to be there. I agree with some of the other posters. Make it a day of pampering for yourself. Schedule a hairdo, go maternity clothes shopping, out to lunch with a friend. If he is rolling it on the walls make sure there is proper ventilation. If he is spraying it on the walls, make sure he as well as yourself use painters masks and open the windows.

generally...latex paint fumes aren't too bad. it was the oil based paints that were really bad. i think if you shut the door and open the windows it should be okay. at 6 weeks- the room should be fine when the baby comes.

No it is not good, if you can avoid it stay out of the house while the fumes clear out. Open the windows or use fans too. It is better to be safe then sorry.

Just go out that day but also have him open the windows while he is doing it. That way he has ventilation and most of the fumes will be gone when you return.

Congratulations!
Most primers today are latex based, and have little toxic vapor. Close the door, open a window, and let him paint, while you go to mall and buy some great maternity stuff.
