Lumber si surprisingly expensive. Check Lowes, alot of times they have a very different price than Home depot. Sometimes better sometimes worse.

Home depot really is the easiest solution. You can buy the 6' tall 8' sections for around $30 apiece. You would want pressure treated pine 4"x4"'s for the posts... they're about $25 apiece for 12' long posts. I have found that if I can't afford to do it all at once, I just buy a little at a time and put up what I can in a weekend. Building your own privacy fence panels is very difficult if you aren't set up for it. If you buy the pre-made panels, you won't regret it. It will look much nicer.

Fraid all lumber is expensive. Sometimes you can go directly to a mill and save a little money. Other wise you might luck out eventually if you keep an eye on the classifieds. My paper often has a freeby section. Also there may be a used building supply store near you. Check the yellow pages.

Check if you have a builders surplus in your area also you could check with local contractors they sometimes have left overs from other construction projects or use used lumber find someone tearing down a building and see if you could purchase the lumber

CHECK YOUR LOCAL DIRECTORY AND SEE IF YOU HAVE A DISCOUNT LUMBER YARD IN YOUR AREA. ALSO.. IF THE QUALITY OF THE WOOD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT YOU CAN GO TO PLACES LIKE LOWES OR HOME DEPOT AND ASK IF THEY HAVE ANY CULLED WOOD? THEY USUALLY SELL IT AT AROUND HALF PRICE.

home depot is great,.. if you buy the lumber as individual boards,.. instead of their pre-fab sections they are usually very competive in their pricing

Well, you know the stores around you.....shop around. Beyond that, you have to put a price on having it delivered from too far away.
