The dictionary says that they mean the same thing; having a lot of money or possesions. I think that there is a huge difference between the meaning because you can be one and not the other. For example: someone who is rich can have a big house, nice cars, great furniture and a fat bank account and only be rich; someone can have a decent house, decent cars, a modest house with ok furniture but with a loving family, a job that makes them happy and friends who esteem them and be wealthy but not rich. To me, the extent of how rich you are is how much money you have and being wealthy is the extent how much you have of those things you can't put a price tag on.

The difference between having lots of cash on hand and having a $500K mortgage you can barely make the payments on. If you can buy yourself a new car in cash, you might be rich. If you have assets of 3/4 of a million $ but never have enough cash, you have wealth.
