the length of the cable is determined by the type of cable that you are going to use. there are various types of cat5 cable.
10BaseT- allows a maximum transfer rate of 10Mbps. this is the normal cable that is used in homes. Maximum run is 100m or aprox 300Ft.
100BastT- allows a maximum transfer rate of 100Mbps. really good if you have a few computers at home that game alot. Maximum run is 100m
now the different types of cables are whether they are twisted or untwisted, shielded or unshielded.
cat5 cable has 4 pair of wires. these are usualy orange, green, blue, brown.
the twist in the cable helps cut down the outside noise caused by magnetic currents. Shielding cuts this down even more.
hope this answers your question.

364 ft or 100m
its a good practice to keep it below that. Anything higher will fail certification.
100m includes from the port on the switch to the port on your computer. The patch cable must be included in the length.
Although my source says 90m, its reserving 10m for the patch code via EIA/TIA standards.

It's something around 125 feet
but I recommend no longer than 100 ft.
*remember that the longer the cable is the slower your connection will be, as well as the strengh of the signal.

Anything over 50 feet will slow your connection speed. You can go much longer than that, but the longer your cable, the slower your speed until DSL/Cable speed is less than dial up speed.
