I let a friend put a vehicle in my name. Tags and insurance are in my name. On Friday, he was arrested on drug charges. What could happen to me concerning this vehicle? Could I be arrested as an accessory? He was not arrested in the vehicle, but I'm not sure where it is now. He travels alot between TX and NC. We are in NC.

P.S. The reason I did it was because he is going through a messy divorce, and his ex told me she was going after everything she could, so that he would have nothing. I was just trying to help him out. I didn't think I would get in trouble. Where I live, half the people on welfare have really nice cars beause the car is in someone else's name.

Also, the car is not mine. He just put it in my name to protect it from his ex (or so I thought).

Since the car is in your name, it's yours and you are responsible for it even if your not the one who drives it or who pays for it. You can be held liable.

I would go to the police and explain the situation to them before they come to you.

This is why you should never let someone put a vehicle in your name. Yes, when the vehicle is found and towed, you will be responsible for the tow bill. If they happen to find anything drug related in the vehicle, you can be questioned regarding it and possibly arrested in connection with it. I'd contact the police now and let them know you let him put the vehicle in your name. Perhaps that can start looking for it at least and get it back to you. It might save you some trouble in the long run.

You are so screwed. You may not get arrested for thr drug charges, but if he crashes the vehicle he can get all the insurance money. If he gets busted for possession in you car, you could get arrested.

They probably wont but they could if they were pricks. Your car can be impounded permenant for Rico act. If it was used in a crime they can keep it. The government will say it was purchased with drug money and you wont be able to get it back.

you probably learned your lesson, huh. Wow if he gives up where the vehicle is they will impound it. You may have to tell the police what happened the truth, it may get him in trouble but how much did he care about you when he was doing what he was doing??????
