It is a place that will always be with you. Once you enter you can't leave.

It's all about what's in your own mind. You can check out, but you can't leave. You are your own thoughts.

Or, it's just an allegory about hedonism and greed in Southern California in the 1970s. The real Hotel California is not a place; it is a metaphor for the west coast music industry and its effect on the talented but unworldy musicians who find themselves ensnared in its glittering web.

Yeah, it's like a horror movie in song. The hotel seems normal on the outside, but it's run by a satanic cult.

From my perspective this is about an addict who is checking into drug rehab. The last line in the lyrics - "You can check out any time you like - But you can never leave " - is about leaving the rehab centre any time, but the addiction will follow you a life time.

Make sense??

you can check out any time you like but you can never leave means he can check out drugs or sex but he isn't free to go...

we haven't had that spirit here since 1969 (referring to the wine) means that they haven't had Jesus around since then....

she's got the Mercedes Bendz means she has an S.T.D.

I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be an analogy about prison.

"We are all just prisoners here, of our own device..." It means that you are the one who builts the gates around yourself...but you also have the potential to free yourself up to the possibility of enlightenment.
