there are two main advantages. The first is that it is easier to do exponents in word processing packages (like Word).
The real advantage is when you multiply them together -- because you can just add exponents.
What is the square root of X times the fourth root of X?
What is X^0.5 * X^0.25
It is easier to see that the answer is X^0.75
It isn't even easy to express that with roots.

It is easier to write and view. As well it is easier to perform operations on because of such.
In a computer it doesnt need to draw as much crap and of course its much easier to enter it into a mathematical program.
