I learned something that was very interesting to me. Some may be very familiar, but not me.
In Mumbai, India for centuries the Zoroastrian dead have been wrapped in white muslin and left at a leafy funeral ground on downtown Mumbai's Malabar Hill, where they are devoured by vultures. Only then can the soul be freed.

Followers of the Persian prophet Zarathustra, Parsis consider fire a symbol of God's spirit, so cremating the dead is a mortal sin, while burial is seen as a contamination of the earth. But the vulture is precious to Parsis who believe it releases the spirits of the dead.

Over the past 15 years millions of South Asian vultures have died from eating cattle carcasses tainted by a painkiller given to sick cows. Conservationist estimate that more than 90% of India's vultures have died, creating havoc for Parsis' funeral rites.

I guess they used to disappear quick, but with so little vultures it is taking at least a year to decompose and the stench is horrible.

It was interesting and surprising to me. Just read it in a U.S. newspaper a couple of days ago. You asked, I answered.

Not today, but earlier this week I learned that swans are the only birds with penises. I thought that was both cool and interesting, as did the students in my World Lit I class.

Yup: today I have learned that "mythology & folklore"-section is much saner than "religion & spirituality"-section.

Many interesting persons come in "m & f"-section: I suppose they were bored in "r & s"-section.

Thx for asking :-)
