my parents use to say this to me all the time. It's suppose to mean that if you don't spank your children when they need to be spanked, then they will turn out spoiled. my parents use to whack us on our behinds with a wooden stick about 3 inches wide and solid...i've had a few break on my back side before..not pleasant...yet they wonder why i moved out at 18 years old and am filled with anger and bitterness and resentment towards them. I will never use this method on my children...don't want them to grow up and hate me. I'd rather they be spoiled brats...then hate me...not that i hate my parents, but there is alot of resentment there unfortunately. They claim they were just following the bible.

it means that if you dont hit them once in a while, they will be rotten kids...."the rod" is old time talk for a stick. In the old days the teachers kept the rod behind the desk and when a kid acted up they gave them a whack across the fanny or knuckles with the rod. I beleive in it, as long as you dont draw blood or leave scars.

it means if you don't parent with an iron fist your child will not learn life's lessons. I don't personally agree, in my opinion leading by example rather than force works better although there are occasions when one needs to be stern to get a point through a stubborn wall...

A child without discipline will be one that turns out rotten...and needing a visit from someone like the SuperNanny.

It means not to punish the child by swatting them...that's a bunch of bull in my opinion. My sisters & I were spanked with a belt when we were little & we all turned out just fine!

It is from the Bible, and it means you are spoiling your children if you don't discipline them with physical force (i.e. spanking).
