I've tried a dozen of methods but this seems to work best:
Spray your tub with Vim (bathroom cleaner) and let it sit for a minute or two. Then scrub gently. Dirt just washes right off. Don't forget to rinse your tub with water.

Ajax is the only product that works good for me, like you i have tried many other cleaners but you can't just sprinkle it and not scrub you need to scrub with a big brush. The blue dots in the ajax attach to the tub so it goes better when you scrub and it removes more dirt and stains, as for nonscrubbing detergents good luck with that cause anything you use you will need to srub. and while you scrub just use a little bit of water not too much. you if you do it this way you probably won't see any stains for a good twoo weeks. i don't know if this helps but i sure hope it does. good luck. Also pepboys sells a good degreaser thats called "purple" that works very good on the tiles and the walls in the tub.

Save your money and DON'T buy the junk you get at the supermarket.
Just go to any janitorial supply store (check your yellow pages) and ask them for a good multi-purpose cleaner, preferably one that's antibacterial. Get a couple of spray bottles, while you're at it, because you'll probably be buying a gallon size, and may have to dilute. They're usually very happy to sell to average people, so don't worry.
Professional grade cleaners TOTALLY ROCK---they're incredibly cheap (because you have to use very little overall) and they work like you would not BELIEVE. One gallon bottle will do for everything in your house for ages.
And once you see how neat it is, you can get in touch with me....my place needs cleaning, and I'm short on time! (g)

I clean houses for a living. These items are the only things I use.First get good plastic scrubber. I use one called Doabie. Then use Softscrub with or with out bleach .After u have scrubbed clean and rinsed use Tylex shower spray. It is in a clear bottle and its clear.Don't confuse it with their cleaner. This is to spray on after its been cleaned and after you shower. If you do this your bathtub will stay cleaner and is much easier to clean once a week.Be sure to spray on right after you clean and rinsed your tub.

You didn't say if the tub was porcelain, acrylic or steel. If it is porcelain you can use a mixture of sodium perborate and cream of tartar mixed with water to make a paste. Take a paint brush and brush it on stained area. Let it sit for several hours and rinse. It might need a second treatment. Before you buy all of this you might try plain ole toothpaste..apply it on one part and let it sit and then rinse..Toothpaste has sodium perborate in it.

I live where we have "Municipal Water" not City. The water is hard and can leave rings really bad. I truly believe in "The Works" I can spray it on my shower doors and with a sponge all the soap scum comes off. They have toilet bowl cleaner too. The stuff is awesome!
