A professional is typically a white collar worker.

The term used to mean someone who was a holder of a doctorate, such as a physician, dentist, lawyer (shudder), etc.

It has become bebased to the point anyone who does anything claims to be a professional in whatever field.

Professional merely means that your paid for it - it's your "profession" - it does not indicate any level of expertise.
