Conquistadors were not generally settlers... they were the first Europeans to explore much of the Americas... The Vikings were the first ones here, but they didn't stay or explore very much... Christopher Columbus stumbled upon the West Indies (Caribbean Islands) in 1492, but it was there Spanish that really made the first explorations of the mainland... They were not settlers though....
For settlers check out the Jamestown Colony and the group on the Mayflower (Plymouth, Mass)

The conquest of the western hemisphere of the indigenous peoples here began with Christopher Columbus in 1492. The people who began the conquest are called, in Spanish because they were Spanish, conquistadores, or 'conquerors'.
The difference between this group of people and the previous groups that made contact from Finland and the Pacific Islands was that Colombus was the first one able to come and go at will, and maintain contact,,, whereas the earlier modes of transportation were not so dependable.
The difference between the Spanish and the English invaders was 110 years,, the Jamestown Settlement beginning in 1607.
Although, technically, the Conquistadores themselves were male, it is commonly understood that the times of the Conquests included settlement, and/or relationships that produced children with the indigenous people and black slaves, resulting in a racial mixture and pioneer group called 'Criolle'.

Actually, if you're speaking of the New World, the first to arrive from Europe were the Norse Vikings led by Leif Erikson, if memory serves. This was WAY before The Mayflower or Columbus.
On the west coast of the U.S., the Chumash and other Native tribes were actively trading with the Chinese, who came to California a couple of thousand years ago. The weights from their fishing nets (dated at around 2,500 years old) have been found on the ocean floor near Palos Verdes, outside of Los Angeles.
