I'm not fishing for points, but thanks for asking this very important question.
There are those who would argue that humans aren't suppose to play God.
Other are afraid that the research would promote abortions.
I agree that we humans are no where nearly capable of being even remotely similar to the divine creator.
And as for abortions, that is a political hot potato that is best left for another discussion.
But I would argue that God gave us free will.
That will includes the ability to question, explore, discover and change the world - hopefully for better.
What would be more God-like than if we could find solutions to the illnesses that strike down young and old alike?
From the link below, here's what those cells are:
"Embryonic stem cells are cultured proponent cells obtained from the undifferentiated inner mass cells of an early stage human embryo (sometimes called a blastocyst, which is an embryo that is between 50 to 150 cells"
So, some would say that those 150 cells are a human.
Maybe so, but if one small cluster of cells could save hundreds or even thousands of lives, would that not be a worthy investment in humanity?
I do not want to chastise any religion or faith, but throughout the centuries, there have been restrictions on medical research because of religious dogma.
Stem cell research is possibly the next age of enlightenment.
To stop it means we are closing our minds and hearts to the knowledge God has given us.

There is a misconception that human life is too valuable to utilize embryos for medical research. Many if not most of the people who take that position support our current war effort, which has wasted many innocent human lives, so it would appear a double standard is in operation. The babies they would save today become the victims, and the cannon fodder, of tomorrow's wars.
I have a very hard time with live animal research, and would be very happy to see medical research evolve to a level where humans and computers can be primarily utilised rather than creatures. Significant breakthroughs in medicine will be much more easily made if researchers have the tools they need to proceed. Using human materiel for human medical research simply makes more logical sense than using animal materiel, and will no doubt lead to more human lives being saved in the long run, anyway. Something the pro-lifers should be pleased about.

I am for stem cell research. I'm a t-4 paraplegic and think that if ever a cure for spinal cord injuries will be found it will be through such research. On the other hand I don't believe in murder. Maybe they (the scientist people) can figure out a way to get the stem cells without having to use embryos. That would be good.

I think it is a great idea and that science can be improved to help peoples lives. However, I am in disagreement with it being an option for scientific options if it costs the life of any baby.
There are means in which the stem cells can be harvested without creating life, and then killing it just to harvest their cells. This is flat out MURDER. Any country that does so, it putting itself in jeapordy.
If the cells are captured from viable sources (such as from placenta of a birthed child) then this would be acceptable form of recovery for the stem cells.

I agree with doing research on stem cells and here is the answer:
1- Many people are born with disablity or become disable. Ask a blind person, or someone with severe heart failure who feels strangulated due to shortness of breath or someone with primary pulmonary hypertension who can not walk 5 steps to go to bathroom before he becomes short of birth. Just imagine if only for one day you can not see, or walk, or breath comfortably, or have to talk a shot every six times in your skin, how would you feel? When you have to carry an oxygen tank for rest of your life. Its like a life sentence with life long torture. These people can not enjoy simple things in life like going out for a walk, or taking there kids to ice cream place etc. They can't pursue a career, they can't do anything. Just ask yourself that if you are in their shoes and some religious phenatic tells you that you can not commit suicide as you will go to hell then and you can not get treatment for some odd religious reason, so in other words its a choice of living hell on earth or going to hell in skies. But no treatment. How will you feel?
2- If women are allowed to have abortions in this country then it is an oxymoron to stop embroyonic research. Is there any president in this country who can afford to stop abortions for social reasons, realistically? Don't right wing voting women or men enjoy premarital sex and in doing so use birthcontrol? Would they be agreeable not to use birth control pills? If answer to above is that they can not stop that then why stopping embryonic research? This is hypocrisy and total denial of treatment to many who desperately need it.
3- I am against non-medical abortions. I am pro-life. But I am not a hypocrate. I think if abortion is justified for medical reason to save mothers life then taking embroyonic cells is also for medical reason to save lot of lives. It is very ethical and justified. It is not inhumane when we think in this way. It should not be a partisan issue but rather should be a human issue. Human ssaving other humans, just like military give their lives to save other lives. Peace

I think its wrong and disagree with stem cell research. I think its a cop out to figure out a way for the fountain of youth and using parts of your own body that create life to take advantage of it. I think its gross and disgusting to use ourselves as giunea pigs. To me its like why don't you just throw your child under the knife so you can live longer and look younger.

i disagree cause it is a misrepresentation of life
and, if it benefits, lets say a blind person by letting him see
why coming up with the research now, saying you have a cure NOW and the person has been blind all his life
