Just in response to some things I'm reading here...are LAZY people responsible for welfare abuse, or democrats? Could we agree that you take out what you put in? Personal accountability as far as it will go, and then a little insurance (paid from your previous work) to help you in times of need?

sure, by accountability, I mean that if you have 5 dollars in your pocket, you spend judiciously. If you FIND 5 dollars, you spend with abandon.

I have a follow up question, to clarify

I'm not confusing unemployment insurance with welfare, I'm suggesting that welfare should go away as a replacement for working, and if you are without a job, unemployment insurance should take it's place. If you don't qualify, because you haven't worked, then I guess we found our abusers!

In a time of need welfare is a good option,as opposed to committing crime.
But, all to often, lazy people make welfare a way of life, instead of a transitional resource.

Sounds good.

I think the problem is, how shall I say, prospective vs retrospective.

People would generally agree that someone who is hardworking but "down on his luck" deserves help. So once someone is really hurting through no huge fault of their own, most people would help.

But once you announce that there is a safety net, you change FUTURE behavior. I think relatively few people really say "why should I work, since the government will take care of me," but some clearly do. And one is always a little less careful on the high wire if there's a safety net than when there's not. Even FDR said welfare-type programs could have a "narcotic" effect, destroying the work ethic.

So I guess I'd like it to be there, but not have people plan their actions around it!

The welfare reform bill of 1996 apparently did a lot of good, cutting the rolls but still tending to the worst cases.

Defense, interest on debt, and "entitlements" (social security and medicare among them) are the biggest portions of the budget - I'm not sure of the order. Welfare is pretty small, from what I remember.

Demographics dictate that social secuirty and medicare CANNOT STAY SOLVENT - but no one really wants to deal with this, it seems.

Yes!!! LAZY people AND LIBERALS are both responsible for welfare abuse. No, I don't agree that we take out what we put in. I don't mind paying taxes for people who are unable to work due to permanent disability or temporarily infirmed and need help. I have not and will not take out anything because I am retired. I saved money, worked hard and was blessed enough to never need it. That's not a problem. Personal accountability is what it's all about. People that can work and don't and liberals who want to take our money and give it back to us in programs because they know what we need better than we do. They are the reasons we are in this mess. The insurance you talk about (paid from your previous work) is unemployment insurance and that is a completely different topic. Keep trying, you're getting it.

are LAZY people responsible for welfare abuse, or democrats?

Bottom line is criminals defraud the welfare system. Lazy people come in all shapes and sizes.

America is lazy compared to the Age of Discovery when Lewis and Clark crossed North America.

America is lazy compared to the Great Generation that rolled up their sleeves and won WWII

Lazy is an enemy; but not the one stealing welfare checks.

Go big Red Go

Yes, lazy people are responsible for welfare abuse. My personal observation is that Democrats are more tolerant of lazy people than Republicans, but this point is a valid one.

As to whether I take out what I put in, so far, this hasn't been my experience with taxes and entitlements in my lifetime (I'm a working male, age 41). I just hope and pray there is a social security program to benefit me when I retire.

I don't understand your last comment / question. Would you please clarify your comment on accountability?

Welfare abuse? Lazy people and/or criminals.

Welfare Benefits? Democrats

Welfare recipients? The failure of the educations system with both parties to blame, especially within the state governments.

I've never heard either party come out against unemployment.

Insurance in times of need should be handled by your personal accountability - that would be saving your own money so that you can survive for a while without a job. Not to mention that that would be called unemployment benefits - not welfare.

It's not right to steal from hard-working people in order to give money to able-bodied people who choose not to work.

It is the Democrats who came up with the program and it is abused by lazy people. They are both responsible for the theft.

What is the value of taking out only what you put in? Why can't I just do that through my own savings account? Why can't I hold onto my own money until I need it. And what if I never use it? Do my heirs get the money? Does it go into their account in case they need it?

I do not need a government baby sitter. I need the government out of my life so I can make my own decisions.

I think you have no idea what the real world is about. You talk like a lazy-kin and probably are free loading off our tax dollars. It seems like you have nothing better to do than *****, I bet you own six cats.

Why don't you go scrub the garbage cans for aluminum scrap before ranting off your Liberal steam on this site?

You are confusing issues here. Welfare fraud is unrelated to unemployment insurance. Secondly, most welfare (or "workfare" as it is trendily called today) was instituted by Democratic governors, and under the Clinton Administration. and lazy or not, in most places, welfare will end in a specified period.
Fraud behavior knows no political base. Crooks exist of every color, every party, male and female.

The dems started with good intentions but then it morphed into abuse. Lazy people were the ones who started the abuse and neither dems or republicans did anything to curtail it.
