A Friend of mine used a budget company, not credit card counseling service, but it really helped her and her husband pay off old debts. I would make sure they are registered with the better business bureau, etc. Also, know that if the company tries to get you to take out a home equity loan = DON'T. If you should fall on hard times, like get laid off, etc. you could lose your home. I have done bankruptcy, but don't do that unless you have no other choice and the amount you owe is significant. Bankruptcy can really mess up your credit. I would avoid credit cards if at all possible, and it should be possible.

Good luck.
