I'm on a Windows 98 PC right now, which is the computer we usually use to connect to the net. I've got Charter cable internet. I'm wanting to connect to the internet through my XP laptop (wireless is busted), so I unplugged the ethernet cord from the '98 computer and plugged it into my XP. On the XP it starts to connect to the internet, but then comes up saying "this connection has limited connectivity" and the reason is because a DNS address was not assigned to my computer. How do I fix this? I'm sorry if my explanation isn't very clear; I'm not really a computer person. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Open your command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. It will list all the relevant TCP/IP info about your computer, including DNS servers.

You will find the command prompt in accessories on wondows xp

First shut down your computer, not restart...there is a difference. Make sure ethernet cable is plugged in & then start your laptop. Click on:
Start, run, & type ipconfig /all
See if you can get a valid IP address.(Not a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address) Call your Internet Service Provider and give them the information that came up with your Ipconfig /all.
They may need to reset something on their end.

Right click on "My Network Places" and select "properties".
Double click the network connetion and make sure the TCP-IP protocol is installed and configured correctly.

Also specify that the IP address should be assigned automatically (DHCP)rather than using a fixed IP.

This should fix you up.

i suppose that you get the IP by DHCP... do you have a fixed configuration on your adapter?

sometimes is the long of the ethernet cord, or the short power of the internal ethernet adapter on the lap

you can try to configure manually you adapter to work in 10Mbps

it works for me one time
