Almost every time I recieve a package, it's been ripped and today I got a package that was supposed to contain a book, but it had been opened and was empty, thats the second time thats happened with a package. What can I do about this? Is calling the USPS customer service really all that can be done? Thanks....

Ask yourself who is tampering with your mail...it's against the law for someone to do this...get a P.O. box (post office box) that way no one else can tamper with it...

The Post Office takes such things quite seriously.

GO to your local Post Office. If it's a small office, you can probably talk to the postmaster. If not, talk to whomever you need to, and find out how to file what you need to file. These things are investigated, and action taken to avoid the problem in the future.

If your package has actually been intentionally opened, they will investigate it VERY well! Chances are, however, that it was simply damaged and the book slipped out. I mean, the USPS pays very well, why would a postal employee risk all their future benefits for a book?

But if you do nothing but complain here, nothing will happen. Your local postmaster is the best resource for solving postal problems, and they try really hard to solve them. Really! Since the USPS is the largest non-military employer in the country, there are going to be problems, but you must realize that you get darn close to 100% of the mail that is sent to you. In other countries, that number is well below 50%. In some countries, it's closer to 10%!

Tampering with someone's mail is a federal offense. The US Postal people will not be amused with this person's antics. Actually, I like the hidden camera idea. They sell them dirt cheap with motion detectors so they start recording when something moves in front of them.

I had the same problem, my fatherinlaw lives across the street and if you contact the Post Office, they will send him a letter stipulating that it's a Felony to take your mail, opening and not returning to you is the same as tampering.Mail Fraud is when you open and do what is an Idenity theft. The Post Office, also has stickers you put on your mail box that says it is a Felony to open your mail box.If your fatherinlaw doesn't get the hint, sad to say but you might need to look into a Post Office Box. They don't costs much , but is an inconvience for you. bri

Go to your local post office with the package and show them what you're talking about. They should have you fill out a form. It's a serious offense to tamper with the mail.

The same kind of thing happened to me. Only I had my lisence renewed, and when it was supposed to be in the mail, I got a phone call saying that someone had found it torn up on the road along with a box of stolen mail. We called the authorities, and they are investigating the matter. If UPS has already delivered the package undamaged, then there is nothing to be done and they hold no liability, and it becomes the responsibility of you and the police.

Remember that packages get damaged pretty easy but at the same time at least more then likly you can figuer out if its a rip caused by an convayer belt or riped open by some one, if you can try to figure out what the damage looks like. Since this is a crime. If you think that its the delivery person doing so contact post master they can figure times and trips and probaly figure it out and that person will get whats coming to them. But if there is a chance and i mean like if you have it delivered to you but you dont see it till hours later b/c your at work or school then there is probaly a higher chance of it being a person that lives on the same sreet or building as you contact the police im sure they could take fingerprints since it would be considered stolen property and they touched it to get in it and if your lucky they could be in the data base at the police station.

You need to contact the postmaster general. Mail tampering is a federal offense.
