Nope, if you ignore your kids now, you will miss out on so much. Actually that song came out when I was in high school and they played it so much that I got sick and tired of it. Now, it is stuck in my head.

Actually, it's often misinterpreted as being about the strange cycle of tragic familial relationships, and how parental indifference can become self-sustaining.

But that's just rock critic BS, of course.

Here's the chorus:

'And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon...'

Here's Harry Chapin on truth serum:

'I choose 'cradle' because I needed another 'c' word. 'Moon' is in there because it rhymes with 'spoon'. The song was orginally titled 'I Swear I Put The Baby To Sleep In Here Just A Minute Ago, But Now It's Gone'...um...do...you have any cocaine on you?'

The message is that the Dad got the same treatment from the son when the Dad was "ready" to pay attention to his son.

What he's saying is, if you ignore your kids when they're little, don't be upset when they ignore you when you're old! You're kids need you to be a part of their life when their small. You will need them to be a part of your life when you are old. That song makes me so sad.

But, what does the Man in the Moon and the silver Spoon have to do with it?
