I would get the yellow fever jab. As someone else said you need proof of vaccine to enter some countries, so if you want to do any travel then it's good to have. As for malaria tablets, you definitely need them. I took Larium, which is one tablet, once a week. Some people had problems with it, hallucinations etc, but i was fine. The other tablets are ok but many are daily, twice daily....it's a pain. Talk to your doctor. You have to start your tablets a few weeks beore leaving the country anyway so if the medication doesn't agree with you you can change.

I would recommend it. It is not required for travel there, like it is in other countries (we had to show proof of yellow fever vaccination in order to get our entry visas into Sierra Leone, which is just down the coast a bit from the Gambia).
The CDC gives some good recommendations for malaria medicine as well. I took Lariam (mefloquine) and then something called Daraprim...and then a proguanil and cloroquine combo. I was in Africa, in high risk malaria areas for almost a year and a half and never got malaria. The medicine isn't fool-proof, but I would definitely recommend taking the anti-malaria drugs! You don't want to get sick with malaria. Talk to a travel doctor before you travel and get a perscription for something that will fit your needs.
