that's ONLY when the screen pass is thrown backwards. it's a lateral, the same thing as picthing it back to a RB. if the screen pass is thrown forward, it counts as passing yards. those passes to santana moss were thrown backwards. if he had not caught them, they would have been live balls.
some of these answers are bullsh*t. if the pass is thrown FORWARD behind the line of scrimmage, it's a pass, not a run. the line of scrimmage has nothing to do with it. the ball does NOT have to be thrown beyond the line of scrimmage for it to be a pass. it only has to be thrown forward, instead of backward

NFL does not count forward screen passes as rushing yardage. Colleges do not count forward screen passes as rushing yards either. As the poster pointed out, a backwards pass to a back is a rushing attempt.
In college, a QB sack is credited towards a QB's rushing yardage. In the NFL, a QB sack is deducted from a QB's gross passing yards.

Because a screen pass occurs behind the line of scrimmage. The runner advances the ball beyond the line of scrimmage so it's considered running yardage.

Because the NFL defines a "pass" as a throw that goes beyond the line of scrimmage. Most screen passes, however, never cross the line of scrimmage, thus meaning they're technically laterals as opposed to passes...

Because the passes are thrown BACKWARDS or forward BEHIND the line of scrimmage. A true forward pass MUST cross the line of scrimmage. Otherwise, you're catching a fumble in flight in the backfield, therefore making you a runner, not a receiver.

I think you need to double-check that. There's no way the NFL would F up its stat base that badly, as to count a forward pass as a rush.
