okay, i don't think my last question was clear enough. i have a windows xp desktop that is about 2 years old. since about may, sometimes my computer will randomly shut off. at first it may have done it like once or twice a week, but now it does it several times a day. it mainly happens when i have more than one window open. i have tried avg anti virus scan and i also have adware personal and they came up clean. im not sure if i do have a virus or if it is something else. the people who answered my question before said something about the fan or power supply, but how do i fix that? please, if you can help me!

Sounds to me like your processor is over-heating. But why?

I had one desktop computer that would over-heat because of excess dust and a second because the fan broke. Either way you're going have to remove the cover.

First unplug the computer and take the cover off. To take the cover off is different for every computer. Look at any manuals you may have for your computer. If you don't have the manual, look for any screws on the front or back that may hold the cover on. Sometimes panels slide on and off.

Once the cover is removed, vacuum it out entirely. Also look for the processor heat sink. It will be mounted on a circuit board and have metal fins stacked side-by side with a small gap between them. Like a stack of cards with a gap between each card. Clean this with the vacuum as well.

With the cover still off you could plug it in, turn it on and watch the fan to see if it is turning on start-up. I think the fan will run momentarily on start-up. After that, it only runs when needed.

Be careful, especially with it plugged in.

Replacing the fan or power should not be very hard once you have a replacement part. You should be able to unscrew it and unplug it.

I think the power supply would probably just stop working instead of overheat.

You might be in over your head for this. You should find a computer shop or a computer technician to fix this. If you don't know what you're doing, you could really mess things up. It does sound like your power supply is failing, or your CPU fan is not working properly, causing your computer to overheat. Seek professional help.

Hey... Does it just shuts off by itself? Does it have any beeping sound?

Try opening the computer case - blast a fan into the computer when ur using it. See if it will still overheat. OR, go into BIOS (usually F2, F5, or del key when u start computer) - u can check the cpu temperature. See if is too high.

You can try a very simple way to test if is POWER SUPPLY problem.. Simply ask ur friends to borrow their power supply , replace it at ur computer then u'll see if is power supply problem.

Your CPU fan is probably defective. CPUs shut down computers if their internal temperature is too high.

Replace your CPU fan. Its a 20$ operation.
