To be a serious actress, it takes three main things. It takes networking ability, talent, and in most cases, looks. I hate how the TV and movie buisness can sometimes objectify girls. But sex appeal sells tickets to movies, etc. But, developing a big networking structure is very important. You can be sexy and or be the best at what your trying to act, but understand you need to know people. And I don't mean on myspace :)

To me actress means a job title. The occupation you are in.
There are natural born actress, whom simply shine in front of the cameras and required no formal training in acting school.
Others mostly learn the from drama schools or theater. As a stepping stone perhaps you may try to go for TV production on sitcom and miniseries lead roles or other auxiliary roles. Alternatively get a manager to promote you for the big screens.
But be ready to work hard for it. All actresses have their own skills and talents. Ultimately it is the outstanding performance in bringing the character to life that will get world wide recognition.
It's also whether you have the luck to strike it at the right time and right place in Hollywood. No one expected Orlando Bloom to shot to fame after acting in Lord of the rings as the Elf Prince. He was with theaters prior making it big in the silver screens.
Keep it going. Oscar is waiting for you.

Talent, of course. And drive-you must be very determined to succeed in such a competitive field. You'll need to be able to handle rejection well.
Most importantly, though, you'll need a good education. The more you know, and the more things you know about, the more rounded you're going to be. Aside from conventional education, you might want to enroll in acting classes. You may also want to see if there are any community theater groups in your area that you could join.

Dear Georgia,
Talent in the field of acting is a given. I assume that to even ask this ques tin, you feel that your acting credentials are in order. The first thing you need is to have a portfolio created and include your head shots. This accomplished, you need a good Representative to get you in front of the decision makers. These people have the responsibility to source actors/actresses fro parts in everything from commercials to movies.
I wish you well,,
