Hypothetical situation: It's time for dinner. The baby is done eating her supper and wants out of the highchair to play. Baby gets put down, and is given a sippy of milk. Now it's time for the big people to have supper. However, baby is whining because she wants someone to play a game with her.

Should the parents A: Leave their supper and go play with the baby, eat at 2100 when the baby goes to sleep?

Or should the parents B: Place baby in the playpen and give her a bunch of toys to enetrtain her while they have supper.

Which of these is the right course of action? Said child is 9 months old, going on 30.

Option B is the better choice. The reason is that by appeasing the child every time, you are essentially enforcing that every time the baby cries or wants to play (or whatever) that you as the parents will be there to do what the baby wants. This in turn will probably make the baby cry/whine more often than if you choose option B.

I would go with B. We have five kids and have gone through this for 12 years. It is a royal pain when all you have is dinner hour to spend with your spouse and a child has to always ruin it for you. Place her in the playpen and put in a video or give her some toys. If she whines, LET HER! She is too young to wear the pants. It will only get worse if you don't take care of it now. Wait until she is two!

That one. Baby needs to learn to entertain herself.

The baby should be eating dinner with the rest of the family and not excused from the table until the rest of the family is done. It's good for the parents as well as being good for the baby to be part of the dinner time interaction.

Why not put the baby in the highchair by the dinner table and give her some toys? Or an additional snack - like some puffs?

You could try and have dinner all together. Why feeding her first when you can eat all together? With nine months she should be able to feed herself so she does not require a lot of help.
Or put her in the play pen and give her toys, but make sure that she is still in sight.
Another thing:don't you thing that nine o' clock at night is way, way too late for a nine months old to go to bed?
In her age she should be in bed by at least 7 to 7.30 at night.

Honey, there is no right answer for your question. I always held my daughters when I wanted to eat something. That is not a good idea, but I did get to eat in peace with no one fussing or winning about it. I know that family time is important and dinner is a good time for that, as well, but sometimes, me and my hubby would take turns. I would let him eat first while I entertained the baby, and then he would finish and let me eat while he played with her. It worked out, we still had quality time. Just do what works for you. Good luck!

Babies are much better at psychology than adults. The baby cries and demands attention, because the baby knows its action will get the wanted reaction. You should do what you want to do. If you want to eat at that time, then secure the baby in the playpen, and eat. Be prepared for a huge reaction. But if you dont ignore it, then baby wins. Be prepared for it to take up to 2 weeks for the new behavior to be learned by the baby. Get earplugs.

The baby should eat with the family, or the family should wait til the baby goes to sleep. It's not the baby's fault you don't want to deal with her while you eat. Dinner time is usuallt just about the only time everyone can be together.
