1+1 = 5 is a synergistic effect. For example, taking pill A alone made you gain 2 pounds and taking pill B alone made you gain 3 pounds, if you took pill A and Pill B together and gained 10 pounds, it would be said that pill A and Pill B had synergistic effects. Many drugs in real life work this way and can be harmful. 1+1=0 is an antagonistic effect. Using the above example again, if both pills when taken together made you gain only 4 pounds, then there is some antagonistic effect. 1+1 =2 is a straight additive effect. Again, using the above example both pills would make you gain5 pounds.

1+1=5. Example: you and a pal meet a bully. You know you can't whip the guy and your pal can't either, but if both of you jump the jerk at the same time he would probably become an ex-bully.
