I am 20 years old and I rarely go to the doctor unless it is something serious. How often should i go there for just a check up exam and what all do they do? Also, I have had one pap test done and I want to know how often should I be getting those as well. Cause I am shy and don't like going to the doctor at all.

Typically the recommendation is to have a gynecological exam, including a Pap yearly. Many doctors will recommend biannual exams if you have a history of clear Paps or more frequent exams if you have evidence of dysplasia. They will listen to your heart and lungs and check your blood pressure when you have your annual gynecological exam, so there's not much need of a check-up beyond that unless you're having any troubling symptoms. My annual has always been my primary contact with my doctor because I've very rarely been sick enough to go for any other reason.

Shy or not, you should get a PAP exam EVERY year. If you should ever end up with an abnormal smear, the sooner your symptoms are diagnosed and treated the better your chances of having a healthy life (in terms of cervical cancer).
Your gynecologist should also do a manual breast exam at every annual check up to make sure he/she can't detect any lumps. Doctors are the ones that find the majority of breast tumors, did you know that??

Otherwise, you should go see your doc only when you're not feeling well. That's what they're there for, after all.

I was raised that you should have a check up / pap every year. But the last time I went to have one done the Gyno told me she recommends for someone with my history 1 every 2 years.

Make an appointment at your local planned parenthood and go in and ask them. Most of the folks that work there are fantastic and if you tell them you get nervouse or shy they will really try to make you feel more comfortable. Plus they work on sliding fee scales so it's much more affordable.

Officially, you should get a physical from a general practice doctor once every year. It is recommended that you have a yearly gyno exam as well, which should always include a pap smear.

Remember, if you take preventive care, it can prevent you from having a serious issue that can involve many trips to the doctor.

Maybe you should see a woman doctor if that will make you more comfortable. You should get a pap smear every year. You don't really need a physcial from a family doctor unless something is wrong. But, you need to go and see a gynocologist once a year.
