Did Mama Cass (from the Mamas and the Papas singing group) really die from a ham sandwich? I know this question sounds mean, I don't mean it to be so; but I really would like to know.

Cass Elliot. Wonderfully talented singer. I miss her.

Claim: "Mama" Cass Elliot of The Mamas and the Papas choked to death on a ham sandwich.
Status: False.

Origins: Cass
Elliot's death was initially misreported as having been caused by her choking on a sandwich. The true cause of death, a heart attack, was not determined until an autopsy was performed a week later, but by that time the "ham sandwich" story had become entrenched in the public's mind.

The coroner's report after her death concluded that Mama Cass died of massive heart failure, brought on by obesity and the strains of crash dieting. The ham sandwich was just a rumour.

Shortly after her death, but before her autopsy, The Times published an article that quoted her doctor as speculating that she "probably... died as a result of choking on a sandwich while lying in bed". However, later that week the coroner found no food in her trachea and determined that the cause of death was heart failure.

She died because she was grief stricken that the US didn't sign the Kyoto Treaty-okay, just joking (she died before it was even written). In any case, the sandwich story was created as a joke about her being so huge-sadly, this society is not kind to heavy people. She probably died of a broken heart because so many people made fun of her due to her size, instead of appreciating her for the sweet soul and magnificent singer that she was. The angels are happy to have her sweet voice.

No, it wasn't from choking to death on a ham sandwich. She died from a heart attack.

The autopsy showed that she'd suffered a heart attack as a result of chronic obesity. She weighed 235 or so and was only 5'5" tall. All the extra weight finally took its toll on her body.

Man, she could sing!

No, that's not true. In the first place, she was Jewish and most likely wouldn't be eating ham in any form. This is a mean urban legend.

She died of a heart attack. In John Phillip's autobiography, "Papa John", he wrote about her death. He loved her and was saddened by the cruel rumors about her death.

She had one of the most wonderful voices I've ever heard - find her version of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" sometime - it's beautiful.

Whether or not it was a ham sandwich I am not sure, but she did indeed choke to death while eating in her hotel room. What a great lady and singer. Absolutely not indicative of anything, could of happened to anyone and does more than we know.
