Crime rates seem to go along economic lines. Most people living at or below the poverty level are caught committing the most crimes. As a consequence this level of society is profiled more by the authorities. Also there is the matter of unequal treatment. Two youths commit the same type of crime, one is middle class the other is at poverty level or below. The middle class level has an advantage here because their families are able to hire an attorney and are successful in most cases to either plea bargain or reach a sealed record agreement while the lower class is left with a public defender. Visit a courtroom some day and just observe and you will see what I mean.
Heres an example. A high school girl from my city whose family is very middle class got drunk on alcohol that her father provided for her. She drove and her car went out of control and did a head on with another car killing a mother and her child. It started out as a second degree murder case. The judge downgraded it to vehicular manslaughter. She was give 5 years of probation. Her father was sentenced to 30 days home detention. Similar cases in this area that have involved people in the lower economic level have been prosecuted as 1st or 2nd degree murder with prison terms.
