who gives them those names, like in WWE, is it McMahon who gives them their wrestler names or do they get to choose who they want to be?

It usually depends. Vince McMahon has the final say, of course. Sometimes a guy will already have an established gimmick that he came up with himself, and sometimes Vince will just throw something ridiculous on a guy and make him do it.

Usually a scriptwriter will come up with a name or gimmick, but usually when a wrestler becomes more respected he gains more creative controll over his charachter and has a greater say in what goes on.

My stepson is a wrestler and he came up with his own name. He currently wrestles under the name of Blackjack Phoenix.

They come up with the names themselves I think. Most of them come from lower level wrestling leagues where they establish an identity.
