It could be a couple of things. First, I would definetly replace the fuel filter. However, the problem could be dirty injectors. Does it have spark? Turn it over a couple of times, pull the plug and see if the plugs are wet with fuel. If they are, then it's an electrical problem. If there is not fuel on the plug, it could be the filter, pump or injectors. If when you turn the key on and you hear a buzzing sound from the rear, then your pump is probably 90% good. If you can't hear it, get a friend, have him/her turn the key to "on" while you hold your ear next to the gas cap (take the cap off first).

Try starting by eliminating the small things first. When you turn the ignition can you hear the fuel pump? If you can't then you have a fuel pump problem. If you can, replace your spark plugs, wires and filters. But eliminating the small least expensive problems first...you will be closer to fixing your problem. It is usually the small things that give you grief the most!

If it cranks over you can eliminate the starter..check to see if you have spark at all cylinders. If you do then check to make sure you are getting gas up the the fuel injector(s). If there's no spark you may need to replace the cap/rotor or coil packs, plugs and plug wires. If you aren't getting gas I'd try the fuel filter first and if that doesn't help, your fuel pump may indeed be bad.

A car might not start for a hundred different reasons, and the cost to fix each is different. Bad fuel pump, bad sensor, bad injectors, loose/bad wiring...
It could cost you $50, or it could cost your $500. Without diagnosing the specific problem, who knows?
