well there is the usual Hamilton, Fraser Island, Lord Howe is not as wet.... if you are thinking outside the square there Bathurst Island (north) Biloela, and lots of little tropical islands off the coast of WA alot more dry than the east coast islands....abit of a Maldives feel...
http://travel.harveyworld.com.au is a good Aussie site for travel to islands - just mooch info off them and then go book it yourself ; )

If you wanna go in December to the North then I don't think there is any way you can avoid getting stung (unless you REALLY wanna make yourself stink with all that mozzy repel stuff). Probably better to go to an island along the Gold Coast maybe in North NSW... if your dead set on an island i can't really help but for coastal resorts the best has got to be Terrigal (spelling?) quite a bit north of Sydney but its really good- if you can afford it rent a house / flat near the beach rather than going for a hotel.
Hope that helps.

Seems that you have a very negative attitude about Australia! I have just spent nearly seven months there and it was WONDERFUL! I was in Adelaide and I never saw any jelly fish or snakes. There are a few redback and whitetail spiders but as long as you kill them they wont hurt you!
As for rain you are more likely to be washed out in the UK than Australia, especially Aelaide as that is the driest state.
Kangaroo Island is a brilliant place to visit.

Magnetic Island, of Townsville Qld. Handy for Townsville's many attractions too (brief ferry trip). Sailing's brill. Surfing could be better. Gorgeous uncrowded beaches. Koalas won't bother you. Accommodation not as expensive as on the well-advertised islands off FNQ. Wish I was coming with you! Happy holiday!!

if you want to just relax and sunbathe on the beach.... or
wish to trek .... or
visit some very scenic places....

the place to tour is TASMANIA.

http://tourtasmania.com/ This is an interactive site.

http://www.tas.gov.au/tasmaniaonline/ tells you everything of the state, with links.

I suggest you write to them through the "contact us" link. We did that, and got very good suggestions when we went in jan 2004.

before you write, do a bit of reading up... and you can decide whether you wish to do the 'east coast' or the 'west coast' or a roundabout!

And you will end up feeling that 2 weeks is just not enough :-))
