I am very interested in getting into local radio and have seen some of the local stations advertising for new djs, even ones without experience, but it seems silly to go in and say something like "yeah, I have no experience, but hire me!" No...not really, but you know what I mean. Any ideas on getting a little experience or help without making myself look like a naive jerk? Thanks all!

That's exactly how I got hired. I was 18 and fresh out of high school. I went in, auditioned and landed the spot. It doesn't matter about experience in most cases (unless it's mandatory)-- keep confident, speak clearly and use a nice radio voice.

Good luck!

There are a couple ways, the easiest would be to obtain a broadcasters or journalist, degree, usually you can get your foot in the door that way by becoming an intern. Now obviously you can start without experience, but typically will be the producers ***** for a while. A little schooling in broadcasting, or even a certification course (some community colleges have those) will probably give you the ample training you need, and will cost very little, and depending on the radio station, some will pay for a certificiation course for their djs and presenters.

It's really only a test.... a test of time and will. If you really want something bad enough, you'll go out and get it. No one is going to give you the cush-gig, you'll have to earn it. It's called paying your dues, and EVERYONE does it. Work at any radio station wherever and whenever you can. Meet people, develop your style, and follow your heart. Look at Howard Stern, it took him well over 10 years. He got fired and moved cities so many times...because he had a vision of what radio could be, and the will to succeed. Plan on traveling light and living on mac-n-cheese for a few years. If you have some talent and enough determination you can do ANYTHING!!! Good luck!

Either join some institute that trains for RJ's. Or, simply call up the radio station enquiring what skills they r looking for. And there is always a first time when u give audition. Better ask alot of questions, believe me they will understand. Alot of people do simply walk in for an audition
