Primitive art forms such as tribal masks are used to show the essence of the subject. Compare masks to the Scream. Colors are darker and more earthy.

It is a fact that Pablo Picasso studied African masks and they served as an inspiration for 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' the first cubist painting. I am speculating here but probably he was fascinated by the way Africans simplify form and have a more harmonious and abstract use of color.
