Sophie calle, Yoko Ono. Joan Miro, Frida kahlo, Bill Viola, Tara Donovan, Eva Hesse....
Have a look at all the names suggested here, type them in yahoo or google images see what strikes you. You should write about somebody that interests you, or that you would like to research rather than just somebody different.
Also go to see some work in local galleries and museums and see what interests you. Don't pick somebody too contemporary, or you will get no (decent) information on them.
Good Luck!

Write about Vermeer. Remember "Girl With a Pearl Earring"? He made some beautiful paintings. Another very interesting painter was Paul Gauguin. He was Van Gogh's friend. He gave up his job and family, moved to Tahiti, lived in a hut and married a 14 year old girl. Very unusual character and an inovative artist. Another excellent painter was Thomas Hart Benton. He painted in France with Picasso and all those guys but then moived back to Missouri, developed a unique style and became a great painter.

My daughter, Colleen Chesbrough, age 21 was hired last year to paint a mural at our local hospital. She is an art major in college studying Therapeutic art for disabled people. She does murals, and portraits for hire. She did a wonderful painting that looked ads though you were looking Through a car windshield out on a hwy. Her work was included in ACT Auction for abused women that Sharon Stone was the auctioneer last year. I'd be happy to give you an e-mail address should you like to know more

My favorite artist is Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun. She broke the French tradition by making a living with her art. Her talent combineed with her determenation earned her a place in the Salon, she was one of the first women to be in the Salon. Later, she became Marie Antoinette's favorite painter and had more than fourty portraits done by her. I think it is very incredible for a woman at that time to earn such an achievement.

For me, Edward Hopper is really interesting. He did all his paintings through doors or windows, which makes his work distinguished from that of other artists. The most famous one is Nighthawks, you might have seen it, it's four people sitting in a bar (i think in New York) and you just see them through the window, it's simple but really moving, and makes you think about things. All his paintings seem to convey this sense of lonliness which i think is really hard to express in art. Also there's no other artist really like him. At least have a look at some of his work, here's a good link i used for my project:

How about Thomas Kinkaide (I'm not sure that's how you spell the last name)? He's a bit commercial, as he also sells prints of his paintings, but he sure is different from the old masters.
There are many modern artists who are worthy of mention, but my favorites are local folks here in the Ozarks, that are well known only to the locals.

Van Gogh is my favorite. If you need a really obsolete one, Walt Whitman was super crazy! Also, Paul Cezanne was a great artist who painted in several different styles. His stuff is super pretty. Good Luck!
