I don't think that the FDNY fire-fighters were any more heroic than any other fire fighters. All fire-fighters do things that most people wouldn't because it is their job and their calling in life. They run into situations that everyone else is running out of.
I think the best way to see this it to watch the documentary film called 9-11. It was done by two brothers who were originally doing a film about a probational FDNY fire fighter. One of the brothers was with the first fire company to respond to World Trade Center 1. He filmed all of the fire fighters as they were coming in to the building and heading up to fight the fire. When the second plane hit, you could see the expressions change on the fire fighters faces as they knew that this was not a normal situation.
Yet they continued on to save the lives of over 20,000 people, a number that is often forgotten when people talk about the 3,000 who died. Any other firefighter in the country would have done exactly the same thing because saving people is something that is in the very fabric of their being.

I think EVERY fire-fighter and police officer is a HERO with a capital H. They place their lives on the line every day, every call they answer. I don't think any one officer is better or more heroic than then other, - they are doing more than just a job, and they do it, not for the money or recognition, but because they care
Many times, they are slandered, and as with any other profession, there may be a few that are less than honorable, but I thank God they made the choice they did - my health, my family and my safety is on the line, and they are out there because they DO CARE!

If courage and heroism can be defined as doing the right thing or doing your job even when it means certain death and you are scared to the point where most people would freeze, then yes, the NYC firefighters of 9/11, and most other firefighters for that matter, are courageous heroes.
Firefighters train constantly for dangerous situations. In the process, they develop a mindset that is opposite to what most civilians would have: one of running toward danger rather than away from it. In a dangerous situation, they feel fear like any other normal human being but as soldiers often say, their training also takes over. As you said, they don't do it for the money. They do it because they are dedicated to saving lives. To me, that defines them as heroes.

I think they all are heroic. If you had put any other firemen in that situation, they would have done the same things as the ones on 9/11. It a special person to be do that job. Anyone who knowingly puts themselves in danger to save the live of someone else....wow! Talk about the ultimate sacrifice.

Most firefighters claim that they have always dreamt to become a firefighter since they were a kid. These are heroes. Because they see it as there destiny.
But, the forest fires in Portugal and Spain this year, some claim to have been lit by firefighters, reservists. So, there are some involved who just like fires and everything that comes with it.

sure - there's never been a disaster like that one on earth before... how do most people react if they see body parts falling out of the sky & balls of flames caused by people deliberatly flying into buildings? they'd probably would run the other way. these guys went into the buildings & died trying to save people lives. would other firefighters do it had they been there? more then likely. but these guys WERE there. they gave up their lives helping others. that's pretty damn heroic to me. so they are all heros, but those guys on 9-11 proved it to the world that day.

Firefighters everywhere would have done the same thing given the same circumstances. Those who choose occupations where they know they could die saving others are heros. The good Samaritan who puts his own needs asside to help someone in need is a hero. I like to think that most of us have it in us at some level.

Every firefighter is a hero because that could have happened anywhere but unfortunately it happened in New York City. Everyday firefighters in every city in every nation is a hero for what they do--it is not an easy job. I use to fight brush fires and it is not easy at all

I don't think they are any more heroic. Saving someone is saving someone, regardless of the situation. People praise the 9/11 fire fighters because people want someone to save them, they want to feel patriotic and that there is someone who can protect them if the government fails.

No. It is their job to go where other men dare not tread. By any definition, they are heroes, as are any who chance their life against the odds. If you've ever been in battle, you know what I mean.
