unfortunately there are many twisted people out there that do get a form of enjoyment out of the misery of others. But then again on a lighter note there are those who were devote followers of Steve Irwin , and in a sense i think believe that since he filmed everything , including dancing his child in front of a croc that they are being robbed, and they need closure. Either way I would say that it is the majority that would wish to see the filmed encounter. Whether it is for pure enjoyment, curiosity, or closure.

Death it's a taboo, just like sex. However, there's no "death puberty" in human development, a stage where dealing with (others') death becomes natural, as in sex. Moreover, for there's no extensive "thanatographic" production (the analog of pornography) (yet), no public expression of death (outside some subcultures such as goths, etc.). Agreed, a lot of movies depict death more or less explicitly, but its "fake" in the sense that the actors don't (usually) really die. On the other hand, porn actors "really" fukc, even though they might not be emotionally involved. For all these reasons, and more, children and adults of all ages are fascinated by it.
I didn't know of Steve Irwin before his tragical death. However, I don't think it would bother me to watch it. He was filmed while scuba diving, his face and expression is probably masked, he can't be heard screaming, he got stifled in the heart by some animal as in some movies (kind of), and the video won't be post-produced to look like a horror movie. I don't think it will be very shocking to watch for those who didn't know him personally. A beheading or a cold-blooded close-range gun-shot execution would be much more troubling to watch, that's why such executions are usually not shown on screen, and even if they are, even if they're fabricated, they don't leave us indifferent.

For the same reason you get rubber necking on motorways, and tabloids publish photos of diana. Its basic human curiosity.Birth and Death are the only taboos left, why do we still not want to acknowledge the fact that we are born and that we die. They are the only common elements of life that we all share. Birth and death and still people cringe from it. Personally I have no desire to see Steve Irwin die, but if he wanted it to be shown, then it's his decision.

Death to me has always been something that in the weirdest way, fascinates me. As far as Steve Irwin goes, seeing how he died would really bother me to watch, but I would like to satisfy my curiosity. People seeing this video can be educated about stingrays and their behavior. I think we know that he would like for his mis-fortune to be used for educational purposes in a positive manner.

Death is interesting. I sure don't want to see Steve Irwin die, though. Doesn't his wife want to show that tape? And why didn't they destroy the footage right away?

Depends whose death we're talking about. George Bush's or Tony Blair's for instance would pack a cinema.
As for the crocodile hunter, I think he deserves respect. If he wanted it to be seen it would be respectful to show it, but so many people would take it the wrong way.

Morbid curiosity I think, or they may want to see if it could have been prevented.
It's a sad loss I think we all agree.
