How connected are you to the place or area you live?

I'm not connected with any one place, and that's because I've lived all over the country, from Michigan to Alaska, and States in between. I'm nearing 40 and I've moved almost 40 times in my life.

...And I moved my family to Tennessee two years ago on a whim. Yep, an honest to goodness whim.

We were living in Alaska, and while a beautiful place to visit, we just had to get out. So while I was in the process of selling my business and the house, I stumbled upon this gorgeous 10 room B&B one block from the beach in Acapulco, and it was love at first sight, so I spent the better part of 6 months trying to buy it.

Let me tell you, as a gringo, it is incredibly hard to find anyone willing to give you a mortgage with only 35% down. All the companies wanted like 65% - 85% down! So most of that six months was spent in the pursuit of raising that capital...without success. Meanwhile, my business and my house was sold and we had to vacate and find somewhere to vacate too...quick.

A friend of ours said...Tennessee is pretty...check it out. So we went online and I thought..."Cool, I've never lived there...let's go there!!" And one month later we moved to Tennessee sight unseen. We knew no one, had nowhere to go, and had no idea where we were even going....but ya know...that was half of the fun and the excitement of the whole whimsical adventure. I stumbled off the plane in Tennessee by myself one week before the family was due to arrive with two cats, a computer and rented a car. And now it's two years later, my kids love it, I love it, I guess my soon to be ex-wife loves it (whole other story), I own a home in a great neighborhood, and who knows I might just get another whim to see what else is out there when the kids leave home...

Well, I've been all over the place, but whether I like it or not I guess I'm pretty connected to where I'm living now. I might have been more inclined to move far away on a whim when I was younger, but even though I hate to admit it, quite a few responsibilities have piled up, most of them revolving around a house I bought with my two brothers and sister-in-law. Also, while I'm less than thrilled about my job, the benefits are quite good and I'd have a hard time finding something comparable. That's not to say I feel totally tied-down, and if some creative, exciting, viable opportunity presented itself, sure, I'd jump at it. I'm planning on taking an extended trip to LA for awhile, but it's definitely not on a whim - at this stage in my life, there's no room for whimsical whims - any kind of significant change takes meticulous planning. *wipes away tear* Getting old sucks!

I could...i did. I ended up coming back though after 15 years.

So I guess I am connected to a certain point. It was the best thing I ever did. Though at the time it scared me. I learned so much. It opened so many doors. I met some awesome folk and learned so much more then I would of if I stayed where I was at!

Go for it...if that's what your asking!

I've done it twice now....once to pursue the girl I loved from afar in high school (we skipped the whole "relationship" phase completely and went from being pen-pals to co-habiting) and again to pursue a job she was offered here in the DC Metro area. It's been an extraordinary -- going from living in sunny Southern California (where I had never even SEEN snow before) to Anchorage, Alaska (where there's snow on the ground for 6+ months out of the year); and now being able to show and teach our son about America right here in our nation's capital....

No, but then it isn't my personality to do so. The older I get, the more I like staying put.

That said, my husband was in the Air Force during the first six years of our marriage. We moved at least once a year! It was an adventure. ; )

Yes I could and in fact planning it. I am very attached to where I am but at the same time where I am is holding me back so a big move is in my future.

I feel fairly connected, but I could move on a whim.
That's kind of how I got where I am now.
