My son lied about being sick so he could stay home and beat the new video game his dad brought him. I already made him clean the bathrooms and took the game away before he beat it, but I don't feel like its enough. Any suggestions or have I done enough?

This is my baby in the picture, he's only 8 months. I'm talking about my older son who is 9.

I would Go to his Teacher and Ask His teacher if she could give him extra Homework. But not to improve his grade but to teach him not to cut school. My parents Did That To Me and I learned Never to Cut School Again Because My Teacher gave Me Allot Of Home Work For Over A month Like She Made Me Do Book Reports and Other Things After That I never Did that Again.

That's is punishment enough the first time. But if there is a repeat, then it is time to pack the video game into its original packaging box and hide it somewhere he'd never reach or find for a period of time.

You should also talk to him about how a game can always wait but the lessons foregone will not be taught again... unless he wants to go back to his level while his peers are already at the higher years and laughing at him for being a laggard.

I think you probably have done enough, but if you really think he needs more punishment to make sure he has learned his lesson. Make him clean the bathrooms for a week and keep the game away from him for a week also. See if he tries this again ( with in the next month then you will diffently know).

sounds like enough for now, but here is a general rule of thumb that i used for my kids- kept them from ever faking sick and staying home from school.
If you are too sick to go to school, the house rule is NO video games, NO tv and NO computers- you HAVE to stay in the bed unless you are using the bathroom or eating. I would allow them to go outside a couple of times to get some sunshine and fresh air but only sitting in a chair. They could read out of a schoolbook or assigned novel if they were bored. They could only eat soup and crackers and orange juice- no soda or desserts.
Now if they had a bad fever, were throwing up and obviously SICK- I would grant some mercy on a few of these issues but if I saw little to no signs of sickness or signs that could easily be faked the rules stood fast. Believe me- neither of them ever wanted to fake sick>

1) How old is your son?

If he's young, just a good lesson should be all you need. He just needs to know right from wrong. If he's older, punishment is definitely needed.

2) Why would you let him play video games when he's sick?

That's if you were aware.

3) How did he get caught...did he tell you himself or did you catch him?

If he told you himself, I'd cut him some slack for coming forward & being honest. If you caught him yourself, I'd punish him.

Generally depending on the "crime" my kids get their allowance taken away, they get 1-5 days of no TV, 1-5 of no dessert, or if he's older - 1-5 days of no phone.

That sounds like enough punishment. The only thing I would do is to sit down and tell him that it was wrong and that if he does it again you will take the video game away for 2 weeks.

please dont ******* tell me that is your kid in your display picture. if so...i think it is u who should clean up the bathrooms. And what does this question have to do about entertainment...other than the fact that it could be under the "Doctor Phil" category. There is a parenting category to put this question under if u haven't seen it already, but that would be a waste of time. Why is this? because if other parents saw this question then they would more than likely give u the "sit and rotate" answer which has become very popular this year.

I think you've done enough. Taking the game from him is a direct hit to the reason he wanted to stay home. But maybe a week of no TV (which of course includes the game) and no phone might set in a little more for him.

You did the right thing. Make sure to remove the tv is he has one in the bedroom and don't let him play the game until next weekend.
