This is a guy about to sign a 15-year deal worth 67.5 million US!!! That's pretty much a life sentence in hockey terms. This will keep him with the Islanders until he is 40!

What do you think about it?

*Personally, i think its absolutely crazy*

Mark D. Good points.

You also have to consider that this is the Islanders. In my opinion, it'll take him a long time to be competitive again.

As when you get into your late thirties, you care more about a stanley cup then money.

The question should be "What is the Islanders owner Charles Wang thinking this summer?" First he fires Neil Smith after hiring him only six weeks before. Then he hires his back-up goalie, Garth Snow, as the new GM. Now he signs DiPietro to a 15 yer contract???!!!! DiPietro has some potential to be pretty good, but having him under contract until he's 40 is kinda crazy. Even if he turns out to be really good surely he'll start to fade by the time he's 40, like Belfour and Hasek. Instead of signing DiPietro to such a crazy deal, the Islanders should have took that money and get someone that might actually help them get into the playoffs. This will go into hockey history as one of the worst signings and Charles Wang is going to be the worst owner in professional sports ever.

Freakin' terrible. In 5 years, IF Dipietro is still starter material, he'll think he's being underpaid and sit out, just like Yashin did in Ottawa. If he stinks, the Islanders will have to eat his salary against the cap. There have been too many revolving doors for goalies lately to think that one will stick around for 15 years, when he barely won the starting job last year. Think back three years. More than half the teams have new starters.

Terrible, terrible, terrible.

DiPietro is not that great. He's slightly above average. But does he make you think of Roy, Brodeur, Hasek,..., no way. There's no reason to think that he's a money goalie who can get you a Cup.

The contract makes it IMPOSSIBLE to trade him. No one wants that much liability and inflexibility on their salary cap.

The contract makes it difficult to bench him. If the Islanders draft some rookie goalie who plays a handful of games as a backup and does great, they cannot afford to see how good the new kid is. At least with Yashin, you could always move him to the 2nd or 3rd line and give him less playing time. With the a goalie, you have to shove him in there.

They pay out the entire contract if he gets injured!

There's no upside to this.

This is probably worse than the Yashin deal. They gave Yashin a big contract back when he was good, and he hasn't been able to keep up with it. I'm not saying that DiPietro will be bad in years to come, but agreeing to such a long term contract is too much of a risk. We'll see if DiPietro can live up to his contract, and if he can, he's trapped in NY!

I think the islanders are some alternate reality, they are the only team that does thing soooo differently, Dipietro isnt going to win them a cup, so why sign him for 15 years?? Whats going to appen when he begins come out of his prime, he will become one of the leagues most expensive back ups, there must be something in the water down there in new york or they let the crazies take over ruin a one of the great dynasties of the 80's. oh well.

What a joke!! This has got Mike Milbury written all over it!! It's obvious he is still running things even though he 'stepped down'. DiPietro has never lived up to his hype. He hasn't played well enough to be offered a 15 year contract. 15 years is a LONG time for a goalie. What a pair--DiPietro and Yashin!!! Poor Isles fans, they are stuck with two so-so players for eternity.

The owner Chan is an idiot. A proper manager would look at past history and correct any errors. Previous signing of Yashin proved tat LONG term deal does not work - overpays players.

And now this. One team down (for 15 years).

GO LEAFS GO!

This is the most backwards organization in pro sports!

They gave Yashin a 10 year deal!

They traded away too many good players to list them all here are a few:

Chara
Luongo
Peca

And my Favorite. They promoted the back-up goalie to general manager while they had a new GM under contract!

Party on Wang! Party on Garth! Gilligan's Islanders rule!

Bold prediction; DiPietro becomes the new GM in a month!

the Ises need a good defense in front of him, as you saw in the Olympics, he can play incredible when he is focused and has good players around him, unfortunately last season the Islanders defense was completely turned over with very little talent left after losing hamrlik,Aucoin,Jonson and kept Niimia. he was horrible and traded half way through..good thing they traded Ralffi Torres to Edmonton for him...lets not even think about trading Mccabe years ago, and berard...

i am a huge Islander fan, they have had terrible front office choices the last 8-10 years, it is tough but I will be a fan til I die
